Shortly before midnight on January 26th, 1905, Maria Augusta Rainer was born on a train en route to Vienna, Austria. In 1924, Maria entered the convent of Nonnberg Abbey in Salzberg. Two years later she was assigned to care for the children of Captain Georg von Trapp. On November 27th, 1927, Maria and the Captain were married. In August of 1936, the von Trapp family made their singing debut at the Salzberg Festival, their acapella repertoire consisting of 16th-18th century music. In September of 1938, six months after the German Anschluss, the von Trapp family abruptly fled from Austria to Italy. Maria was pregnant at the time and, since the family's exodus was necessarily stealthy, they were forced to leave behind all possessions, except what could be carried in backpacks. Travelling as refugees throughout Europe, Maria, Georg and their ten children emigrated to the USA, settling in Stowe, Vermont, in 1942.
